Since 1996, West has traveled to Cuba and brought back lots of paintings, photographs, and works on paper, including posters and prints. This collection includes work by a group of naïve painters from Mella, Cuba, called El Grupo Bayate. These 8 artists work together in a studio donated to them by the town of Mella. Their styles vary, but they have the distinction of being self-taught and using mostly bright primary colors in paintings that tell a story.
You will see work by another of Cuba’s most famous artists, Jose Fuster. West has collected his work since 1996 and though much has sold, there are some still in her personal collection which are also for sale on the site.
There are wonderful sculptures one of Cuba’s best known sculptors, Blanca Rosa Chacon and random works by lesser-known but important artists. Enjoy and have fun as you look over the collection.
