Going to Cuba for the first time in 1996 changed my life forever. With Sandra Levinson as guide, our group was introduced to some of Cuba’s most accomplished and recognized photographers. First, the grand master of them all, Raul Corrales. His work was and is a reflection of his character. Dignified and reserved, important historically—these words fit the man and his images.
From the moment we met, I felt a real liking for Corrales. He and I spent a long time looking through his piles of photos from the days of the Revolution (late fifties-mid sixties). His respect of the Cuban soldier and the lifestyle of the Cuban people are evident in all his work. I was only able to buy a few works, but those are now some of my most prized pieces. I sold a few in my gallery, but luckily I have a few left. All photos are approximately 11”x14”.
