West considers herself very fortunate to have traveled the first time with Sandra Levinson, director for the Center for Cuban Studies in New York. "Sandra knew everyone," she said. "She took me to the apartment of Alberto Korda, the man who did the famous 'Che' photo. “We got to be good friends, she says. “Korda died several years ago and I really miss going to his house. There were always people there from all over the world. But I felt like we were real friends. We did a limited edition of golf photos together and a smaller edition of the Che image. That photo is now worth a lot. I'm saving one for each of my kids.
"Korda made a deal once with Travel and Leisure Golf," said West. They wanted to use a photo of his entitled "El Juego de Golf" for the cover of one of their issues. Korda agreed to the use of the photo but was furious with them when he saw it because they changed it. The original photo had a whole group of Revolutionaries, caddies, onlookers, etc. standing around while Che Guevara tried to put. His stance is very strange, something most people would notice--especially if you are a golfer. But it's even stranger because he is wearing combat boots and fatigues." Travel and Leisure Golf erased all the onlookers and just left Che and Fidel standing around the hole. When Korda saw it, he told West: "Would you change the nose on a Picasso?" |
