Milly Moorhead West, a well-known Southern photographer, made her first trip to Cuba in January of 1996 with the Center for Cuban Studies in New York. She currently has a license to travel issued by the Department of Treasury because she is a gallery owner, but art trips generally have become all but banned by the current administration, a policy West feels is counter productive.
"Everyone who travels knows that the best way to form good lasting relationships with other countries is by people to people exchange. There used to be artist and cultural exchanges almost as a matter of course. Americans were able to learn from their Cuban counterparts in music, art, medicine, healthcare, and vice-versa. Not so easy any more. While working on my show in Tulsa last year, I found out some Oklahoma wheat farmers are selling their wheat to Cuba now, so maybe inch by inch, we can normalize relations."
